Area of VRR

Different areas in Germany have different operators. The image below shows the area of the VRR (Verkehrsverbund Rhein Ruhr). In this area students of the University of applied science and arts in Dortmund are able to travel free of charge with their student-ticket. Normal travel prices differ by the distance, which is done.

Traveling-Zones

There are three important traveling-zones, that are relevant to travel in the area of the Airport Dortmund:

  • Short Distance: allows you to travel up to 1,5 km. This are normally 3-4 stations, but the area around the airport is more rural and kind of a pastoral idyll, so this is only usefull inside of the direct city of Dortmund.
  • Zone A: for use inside one town. You are able to travel in the whole area of Dortmund or Unna for example - but not to reach the next town.
  • Zone B: This is the ticket you need, to travel from Dortmund to the airport or the other way round. It enables you to reach all destinations inside the town, where you bought the ticket and even those, which are located in the towns around this city.

Special Information

If you have the privilege to fly from the airport in Dortund, there are some usefull hints, you should know about. So pay attentention to the two aspects below.

Travel to the airport

You reach the airport by using the train "RB59" from station nr. 4 at Dortmund Mainstation. It takes about 25 minutes to Holzwickede, but the train is late really often or is even canceled from time to time. Depature is always at 7 minutes and 37 minutes past, for example 12:07 and 12:27 - but have a look at the depature plan on the station or on the internet, there are some special days with less connections during the day.

When you have reached the station in Holywickede, you need to take the airport bus, which leaves every 15 minutes. Just wait at the signed bus area, sometimes to bus is late or early, but it drives all day 4-times a hour. In case you want to go by feet, it will take you about 20 minutes.

If you want to go by car, this is normally not a good idea, because parking is really expensive next to the airport (about 7 EUR a day!) and there a no hidden free parking places at all. But Phil lives like 3 minutes away from the airport, so you can ask him about this and maybe park your car next to his place :o)

Stores & Hotels next to the airport

There some nice places you should not miss, if you are at the airport. On the way from the railway station there is a dealer for Ferrari and Maserati and a really huge future-designed building with a Porsche dealer inside. Have a try if you want to see modern german architecture and get a ride on a nice german engineered car, which a worth to drive on the "German Autobahn" (Highway) - most of them do not have a speedlimit.

Furthermore there is a local dealer of Ducati (famous italian motobike) and a small casio. 3 minutes from the airport, there is a cheap hotel (40 EUR for a double room per night) - but do not expect to much for this price, very basic 3 * Hotel.
